About This Wine

These wines come from good holdings that were originally part of the famed Peter Nicolay estate at the turn of the century. Itschert split off from CH Berres in 1958 to make their own wines, then sold off the property and parcels at some point after the early 70s. The youngest Itschert wine I can find reference to is from 1971. They also owned and ran the Hotel urziger Wurzgarten and you can find old postcards for sale online showing the hotel with the Itschert name on them. It's still there in urzig but looks to be an absolute dump. In 2013 MFW reviewed a '69 Wurzgarten Spat and said: "This is quite evolved in color with orange reflection. The wine is very smoky on the nose with notes of apple, wax, toffee, raisin and gingerbread. It proves surprisingly fresh and zesty notes on the palate, and offers a long and quite pure finish. This is dry in taste but still very enjoyable and fine." If the description of the '69 appeals to you, the '71 is going to be right up your alley.
