About This Wine

Schafhausen is still around but is now run by Dieter Schafhausen, the 4th generation to be in charge of this family estate. Presumably Herbert was his father but could have been an older relative. The Kanzemer Sonnenberg is a west-facing site on the Saar canal a bit north of Saarfeilser, so this 71 Auslese should be incredibly racy and fresh. The capsule is deteriorated but firm and no seepage; fill at 3-4cm. The color is lovely and the label in good shape aside from some rips including one that nearly obscures vintage but I think you can confirm this is 1971.
