About This Wine

Beaune-Grèves is easily one of our favorite 1er Crus of Beaune. Compared to the rest of Beaune, it offers a greater level of finesse and an elegant thread of rocky minerality.

De Montille turns out one of the great examples of Grèves. Their Grèves hits a magical combination of nimble finesse and flavor impact. You get a gorgeous purity, minerality, fruit, and overall perfume. Part of the story is location. Their parcel is situated just below Bouchard's "Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus", one of Burgundy's legendary sites. The De Montilles believe that their Grèves delivers a level of class, complexity, and age-worthiness just shy of their Grand Crus. It's difficult to argue.

The 2017 Grèves is gorgeous, delivering serious depth and vibrant acidity. There's a very appealing stern, mineral-inflected texture. It's hard not to be impressed by the delineation and length. We drank a bottle recently and were amazed at how much it had to offer while showing the underlying structure to age brilliantly.

De Montille is one of the famed domaines of the Côte de Beaune. They are famously long-lived wines. They are classics. Nothing is rushed; there appears to be little interest in exploiting youthful flash. Today, Etienne de Montille handles the winemaking. The thread of purity and finesse continues to run through the wines. The 2017 is a monument to this long-time standard bearer. It shows much honesty, finesse, and the sort of architecture that really pays dividends. This is a bottle that you'll want to watch evolve.
