About This Wine

Joiseph's Altenberg represents a shattering of expectations of what Grüner Veltliner can be.

It is simply beyond category. No other Grüner Veltliner we've tasted combines such force, structure, and the plush layers of herbs and minerality associated with the grape.

Trying to draw comparisons is close to impossible, but there are similarities to white Burgundy and even northern Rhône whites. Ultimately, it's a stand alone wine of the highest order.

As Vom Boden's Stephen Bitterolf, the wine's importer writes, "In certain Austrian-wine-dork circles, this is one of those wines people talk about." Founded in 2015, Joiseph immediately became a favorite of Burgenland winemakers. Word quickly spread from there. The wines represent an incredibly exciting new horizon for Austrian wines.

In some ways the wine almost feels like an orange wine with its tactile presence. Yet the mineral drive, the polished core, and the lift of the vivid acidity make it feel incredibly fresh. It is these extremes that convinced the Joiseph estate to hold the wine back, releasing it years after the vintage.

The Altenberg originates from the limestone soils of Burgundland, Austria's easternmost wine region. It's a single vineyard in one of the coolest parts of the region. While it's hard to contextualize the wine, the noble thread of minerality and the wine's cut make clear its cool, limestone origins.

What makes the Altenberg truly compelling and endlessly intriguing is its purity, mindboggling architecture, and individual personality. There's something profoundingly impressive about how it pulls all of this off.
