Bachelet's Charmes is one of Burgundy's masterpieces.
It is among the rarest treasures of Burgundy. Allocations, even to major merchants in major cities, often come down to a single bottle. Bachelet's plot is a mere 0.44ha of very old vines. Bachelet makes somewhere around 180 cases.
For us, there's no better example of the Grand Cru than this. More accurately, Bachelet's Charmes ranks among our favorites in all of Burgundy.
Bachelet's Charmes is larger-than-life. When this wine is in its zone, it has few peers. It's wickedly complex, deeply mysterious, and insanely powerful, yet manages to maintain an ultra-clear, super-elegant balance.
Today, I'm happy to offer three vintages of Bachelet's incredible Charmes. Above all else, these wines highlight just how consistent this wine is. Few red Burgundies have a similar track record to Bachelet's Charmes.Â
Starting with the 2003, this is one of the high points of this infamously ripe vintage. As Burghound writes, the wine "remains elegant and impressively pure and the length here is phenomenal." The 2006 is the most powerful and intense of the three wines. It really boasts the old vine concentration. The 2007, while not lacking in intensity, is the most silken and red-fruited.Â
I'll wrap this up. Bachelet's Charmes is a wine that I'm constantly on the lookout for. It's rare that I find the wine with age and in any quantity. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.Â
