From the Cellar
2000 Ponsot Clos de la Roche
"...potentially - and indeed very often in practice - one of the very best not only in Morey but among the whole of the Côte." -Clive Coates
This is an awesome back-vintage Burgundy steal: Laurent Ponsot's 2000 Clos de la Roche at 20% below the lowest pricing in the nation and shockingly with a decade of age at well below the prices of the recent releases.
As Coates' quote above suggests, Ponsot is truly one of the masters of red Burgundy - and if he has a magnum opus, it is his Clos de la Roche.
It is an epic wine: muscular, severe, deep, structured. This is one of those tour-de-force Burgundies; a wine that overwhelms, a wine that has just about everything.
The provenance is about as good as it gets - one cellar with the wines coming to us still in their original packaging.
For the collector, this is a rare opportunity to back-fill Ponsot's top bottling; for just about everyone else this is the chance to experience one of Burgundy's truly great wines, in top form.
We expect this parcel to disappear quickly, so please give us your maximum order as soon as you can.
In 2000, Ponsot made a wildly enjoyable collection - the wines have an uncommon rigor; the Clos de la Roche is defined without feeling too brutal. If 2000 is often thought of as a year that paraded big fruit without much discipline, Ponsot transcended the easy assumptions. Laurent himself described his acidities as "perfect" - his 2000 Clos de la Roche is sexy and supple (Ponsot does "texture" like few others), with rich, deep, wildly floral fruit... yet it also maintains poise, finesse.
In 2000, Ponsot reported a smoother growing season and harvest than most; yields were also well in-check, somewhere between 37 and 38 hectoliters per hectare, which helped him keep concentration and focus in his wines.
It’s exactly this freshness aligned with richness that make this a beautifully accessible, generous and downright sexy bottle right now - these are due in early December, so they’ll be in perfect shape for holiday parties and dinners. The exuberant fruit will please both diverse palates and diverse dishes, while the detail and finesse shown here will thrill the Burgundy purists.
As a final note, it’s also exactly this freshness aligned with richness that makes the 00 Ponsot Clos de la Roche perfectly suited to put away in the cellar for another five, even ten years more without worrying about any sacrifice in vibrancy or structure. We've priced four-packs today with both the season's impending parties and gift-giving in mind. Again, we don't expect this to last long, so you're urged to give us your maximum order quickly.
