An Introduction to the Master of Meursault
2007 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc
Jean-François Brings His Whole Game
to His "Most Basic" Wine
What to say about Coche-Dury that you don't already know?
As with Picasso or Miles Davis or Michael Jordan - there’s very little left to be said. They're the best.
So it is with Jean-François Coche. His wines represent the pinnacle of white Burgundy; they are wildly powerful (physically and emotionally) made in tiny quantities with a massive demand… and generally priced accordingly.
While this is not an inexpensive "Bourgogne Blanc," keep in mind Jean-François brings his whole game to his "most basic" wine: the signature, sexy, heady aromatics of dark earth, flint and toast backing the pure, luscious fruit, all aligned with sheer power… something so intense and saturating, dense and pushing, yet reverberating throughout with wavelengths of acidity and a core of stones.
Coche's wines represent balance at its most extreme - a surreal partnership of tension, minerality with opulence. There is nothing else like it, truly.
Coche’s secret is not so secret: a hyper-attentiveness to his vines, ruthlessly tiny yields and scrupulous winemaking before a long, long rest in barrique and a light fining, though no filtering. When as much care goes into "just" a Bourgogne Blanc as goes into his benchmark Meursault Perrières or Genevrières, you can pretty much guarantee that the results will be anything but "basic."
