Whoa, Sister
2007 Mugneret-Gibourg NSG 1er Cru Chaignots
Nuits-St-George that Drinks Like a Vosne-Romanée
15% Below the Lowest Price in the Nation
We've said this before - though perhaps not frequently enough, as the wines are sadly becoming a needle in the haystack - the Mugneret sisters are producing some of the most honest and compelling red Burgundies.
Elegantly reserved, vibrant and transparent, these wines bring out the droves of wine geeks; but the serious Burgundy collectors have really taken note of this domaine in recent vintages, and for good reason. The clear quality of these wines just continues to climb off the charts.
Today, we have one of our favorite Mugneret-Gibourg wines, a bottle that is the perfect personification of the house’s style: the 2007 Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Chaignots.
For a Premier Cru Burgundy from a top-notch producer, this pricing is unbeatable, helping the bottle edge itself almost down into the pricing for the top village Burgundies.
This is a Nuits-St-Georges that drinks very much like a Vosne-Romanée, all spicy, beautifully perfumed and provocative, yet there’s also great NSG-esque concentration and a certain refreshing, jovial nature to the whole package. The Vosne-Romanée affinity is natural, as the Chaignots plot sits on the slope leading into Vosne, and the Mugneret sisters are able to pull fantastic elegance out of this pebbly, brown limestone soil.
I love how the sisters describe their Chaignots as having a "greed-inducing nose and palate" - it’s true.
As we drink more of the 2007s, our conclusion is clear: This is a really beautiful vintage. Juicy and just packed with lovely fresh fruit, these are seriously fun to drink right now, and yet they also have ample spines that promise good aging over the midterm. If you haven’t had a Mugneret-Gibourg wine, 2007 is a great vintage to start with them, as the house style suits the vintage perfectly - fresh but focused with verve and depth.
