Affordable Raveneau
2008 Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Forêt
Lowest Price in the Nation
We've emailed about Raveneau and Forêts more than once.
It's an obsession.
Words written last year bear repeating: "When Raveneau is this affordable and delicious, there are just two simple words... stock up."
No, this is not a cheap date, but as Chablis continues to get more and more attention, the minute quantities of wine Raveneau produces are getting harder and harder to find. In an awesome vintage like 2008, these wines hit the market strong and are disappearing quickly. (If you can find any of Raveneau's Grand Cru Clos, expect to pay somewhere around $400.)
The Burghound quotes Bernard Raveneau as stating, "2008 is clearly at least a very good vintage and they remind me a bit of the 1996s but with better concentration..."
Better concentration than the 96s? For anyone who has had the luck to have any 1996 Raveneau, you understand the weight of that statement.
At as low as $85 on the 4-pack, this is one of the most accessible Raveneau single-vineyard Chablis - though in a vintage as structured and as ruthless as 2008, expect more than enough mineral and expect this wine to age for a decade easily. A 2000 Forêt drunk this week was still young, with a fresh energy and very confident palate presence - and this is a vintage without the guts of 2008.
The Forêt site - one of the top Premier Crus of Chablis - is part of Montmains, with more clay in the soils and a slope perpendicular to that of the Grands and Premiers Crus across the Serein river. Year in and year out, the parcel yields some of the ripest grapes of the vintage. This gives the wine a generosity, a fullness and depth. If this wine ever lagged behind the general Raveneau stable, it has been on the up-and-up since 2006 or so - 2008 may represent the best yet.
There is something about the style of the vineyard that I've always liked; indeed many of you will recall that Dauvissat's 2008 Forêt was my wine of the year this holiday season. We sold through this large parcel very quickly.
As you can imagine, this parcel of Raveneau is much, much smaller - therefore this offer goes out to a much smaller list. Give us your maximum order and we'll do the best we can - but please expect allocations to be cut back a bit. All orders subject to confirmation.
