A Surprise Knock-Out from 2009
2009 Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges
1er Cru Les Roncières
$68.95 - Lowest Price in the Nation

"The Chevillon wines have a long history of offering some of the best value wines in all of the Côte d'Or and deservedly so. Readers should know however that the 2009 vintage produced, in several cases, the best examples that I have ever seen..."
- Burghound

If you are not familiar with the wines of Chevillon, you really should be - and not just because they are some of the greatest values in all of Burgundy, as the Burghound suggests.

Nuits-Saint-Georges presents one of the most unique expressions of Pinot Noir in the Côte d'Or: The wines are dark, midnight-purple fruit and flowers aligned with black soil and mineral. Nuits-Saint-Georges is famous for Pinots that are powerful, blanketing, textural, structured, even animal. They have something of the masculinity of Gevrey-Chambertin, yet wilder. If they are not quite as elegant as Gevrey, they are richer, more brooding.

Have no doubt, great Nuits-Saint-Georges can be just as haunting as any wine made in this fabled land, yet they remain exceptionally well priced.

Today we bring to you one of the surprise stars of the 2009 Chevillon collection, and it comes to the table well, well under $100 (and at the lowest price in the nation).

The 1er Cru site Roncières is located in the southern part of Nuits-Saint-Georges; Denis and Bertrand Chevillon themselves describe the vineyard as producing a wine that is lively, linear, fresh and say it even comes with "an austere note" - yet in 2009 (as we've discussed many times) the "austerity" provides a really beautiful balance, the ripeness and texture and dark plush fruit of 2009 matched to the natural focus, delineation of the site.

It's probably more apt to just quote the Burghound here: He writes, "...potentially the best example of the Chevillon Roncières that I have ever seen."

As with most of the 2009s, this wine will have a long, long drinking window. Crack it open as soon as you get it, bury it in the cellar for a decade. We'd personally recommend waiting - while the fruit is already in full effect, for the complete show, for the true magic to come out, the secondary notes of dark soil, rock, crushed leaves and even animal allusions, hold on to the wine for as long as you can.

For Chevillon, for the moment, the pricing simply hasn’t caught up to the quality. Particularly in the heralded 2009 vintage, the Roncieres really offers exceptional value. While I'd encourage everyone to go long, I'm afraid the size of our parcel may well limit the best intentions. Give us your ideal order, and we'll do the best we can.
