Beaujolais 2009: Tardive Take Two
09 Clos de la Roilette "Cuvée Tardive" 750 and 3L
One of Beaujolais' Longest Lived & Most Profound
In response to Monday's Tardive magnum offer came an outpouring of requests for regular-sized bottles. Today we offer 750ml bottles and a few rare double-magnums at the lowest prices out there.
Through a bit of persistence and a bit of luck, we were able to secure an additional parcel of Tardive 750mls - today we're happy to answer your requests.
And for you Beaujolais fanatics (and we know you're out there), we've also been able to secure a few rare 3Ls, Beaujolais double-magnums that take a long-haul Beaujolais to the next level.
Interest in Roilette's wines, no matter the format, is not surprising. I can't think of another producer in Beaujolais outside of Kermit Lynch's "Gang of Four" who has attracted such a cult following. The 2009 Roilette "Cuvée Tardive" has the potential to be the most monumental Tardive to date. Roilette's owner/winemaker Alain Coudert himself compares the 09 to the 91, a wine that serves as the estate's benchmark.
One of the striking qualities of the 09 vintage is how delicious and present the wines are right now, unlike the 05s, which were skeletal and, at times, downright angry. What we have in 2009 are deep, majestic Beaujolais that combine grandeur with elegance, wines rich in tannins, round, with velvety textures and seductive turns, all saturated with granite allusions.
With a vintage like this, it makes perfect sense to stock up on the full range of formats: Regular bottles for the shorter term, magnums and jeros for the long, long road ahead.
Just for a brief refresher, Roilette's Tardive comes from two choice parcels of eighty-plus-year-old vines. Roilette may carry Fleurie on the label, but get into the clay soils of Roilette's parcels and you'll find plenty of manganese, typical of the soils of Moulin-a-Vent. Roilette's Tardive possesses a majesty that certainly deserves to share the "King of Beaujolais" title that gives Moulin-a-Vents their swagger. (For more on Roilette, please check out the piece I've written on my Roilette visit.)
As we said on Monday: It's unlikely that anyone in Beaujolais is making as ageworthy and complex wines as Roilette.
We're extremely lucky to be receiving additional Tardive. Given the wine's reputation and the buzz circling the 2009 vintage, it's unlikely that our limited supply will last for long. Please give us your maximum order and we'll do our best to fill it. All orders are subject to confirmation, which you'll likely get on Monday.
