2009 Bedrock Syrah Old Vines 1.5Ls
One of the Oldest Vine Syrah Cuvées Made in the World
We're talking 121-year-old vines. A single barrel of wine. The debut vintage, and bottled only in magnums. This is the most limited production wine made at Bedrock, and we're the only ones who have any right now.
Today we share the debut-vintage, old-vine Syrah magnums only with those of you who have supported our California program. There's only a handful of these to go around, so reply quickly if you have any interest!
The 2009 vintage was the first in which Bedrock proprietor and winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson made an old vine Syrah from his eponymous Bedrock vineyard site. He has called it, simply enough, "Old Vine Syrah."
Morgan says 09 has been his favorite vintage so far, and the quality of the Syrah grapes was particularly impressive, so he separately picked the 121-year-old vines that would normally go into the Heirloom blend. He then put half of them into their own single varietal wine, thereby crafting one of the oldest vine Syrah cuvées in the world.
Indeed, this is old-school to the core. The site was originally founded by General William Sherman and General Joe Hooker of Civil War fame; the vines were replanted in 1888 by Senator George Hearst, father of William Randolph Hearst. The winemaking draws clear inspiration from the home of Syrah in the Northern Rhône. If you've had Rostaing's Côte Blonde, you'll see where Morgan was going with this wine. If you haven't, well... this is a great alternative that costs way, way less (and is frankly more limited in quantity).
Swarming with bacon fat, smoke, peppercorn spice and dark fruits, the 09 Old Vine Syrah definitely strikes the same balance as that benchmark, despite its size. The sheer power and richness is beautifully calmed by a tension that pulls this into elegant territory. It is an infant at present but, quite definitively, it has the bones for long-term aging. The best plan would be to take a couple of these and bury them in the dark, cool depths of your cellar for 10+ years.
This certainly deserves a place there alongside other culty California Rhône Ranger bottlings and even its northern Rhône counterparts. And yet, at today's pricing of $99.95 a magnum, this is a much more affordable rarity.
Please give us your maximum order, and we'll try to get a couple of these into as many hands as possible. To order, please email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463.
