1989 Krug Collection: The World Premiere

Posted by CrushWine

"Complex aromas of undergrowth, pepper, candied fruit, orange peel and gingerbread. On the palate, its flavours are lush and mellow... intensely expressive and exceptionally harmonious... vivid and vibrant..."

- Olivier Krug, Maison Krug

I've been very thirsty lately... for old Krug.

It's been about two years since the latest "Collection" release - so you can understand why I was giddy for their next cellar treasure. This is, as Richard Juhlin says, a house that "stands for artistry, tradition, craftsmanship, and moments of pure pleasure."

In truth, every release from this sparkling maison is cause for celebration - they dole out these super-coveted "moments of pure pleasure" only once every few years; and each time, the release is legendary in its own unique way. So I feel very pleased to say that at last, the 1989 Krug Collection has arrived...

Today I'm thrilled to present the world premiere of this superb Champagne at $499.95 a bottle.

The 1989 Collection is hitting the market this year in severely limited quantities, coming straight from Krug's cold, deep cellars in Reims.

There are over two decades of rest on these bottles - a protected, pristine evolution - and the purity and freshness are on devastatingly delicious display here with a spine of firm, strong acidity fused with the rich mellowness, luscious spice, the butterscotch, hazelnuts and almonds of the original 89 release.

The 1989 is the "middle child" of the vaunted trilogy of Champagne vintages released by Krug - 1988, 89 and 90 (we know quite well that the vintage offerings are exemplary, and rare from Krug) - but there is no "middle child syndrome" to speak of here, no sense of this being an outsider or wanting for attention. This bottle stands tall and proud, warranting due praise for its incredible balance, generosity and intense expressiveness that is currently, undoubtedly, providing the most sheer drinking pleasure of the three.

I always knew the 89 vintage was terrific, but out of 750ml format, the stigma has always been that it is now "ready." However, this Collection bottling exceeds my expectations by weaving together the opulence and seductive hedonism of the vintage bottling with a freshness that clearly takes this to a level above and beyond its earlier iteration.

As Olivier Krug says, the 89 Collection deftly demonstrates Krug's "ability not only to surprise the senses but to reveal the true personality of a single year."

Our parcel is in stock and ready for delivery next week. However, availability and pricing will not last long. The 89 Collection, in its sleek wooden box, is ideal for presenting to friends and family for celebration this holiday season.
