1994 Karthauserhof Spätlese Trocken 1.5L
Mineral-Drenched Magnums from the Ruwer Valley
This sort of offer doesn't come around often...
36 magnums, only recently pulled from the cold, stony cellars of Karthauserhof, from one of the top vintages of the 1990s.
This is an offer going out only to those of you who have supported our fine and rare Riesling program because... well... these are very fine and super rare.
Karthauserhof is one of the grand old estates of Germany's Ruwer Valley, and the wines in this pine-forested valley display a truly unique play of minerality and acidity.
These two sensations are, for a Karthauserhof, more than mere descriptors - they are the very core of the composition. The fruit, though lean and graceful, is never the most important part of a Karthauserhof. Rather, the wines quietly reveal a singular delicacy, a wispiness that is persistent and always refreshing, like a brisk morning fog where you can almost smell and taste the cold stones in the stream and the lemon orchards over the hill. Not surprisingly, this is very much the atmosphere at the estate.
For the mineral hound, the "rock dog," these are some of the most fascinating wines to age. With 10, 20, 30 or more years the wines begin to reveal a mineral nuance that is among the finest, the most unique out there. The scents range from pine needle to dried flowers, white stones, slate, sand and mineral water all buoyed by soft, gauze-like washes of lemon, green apple and pear.
And it should be said that the dry wines here taste very dry. The 1994, perhaps to balance the richness and concentration of the vintage, sports a mean acidity - we're talking damn near 10 grams of acidity per liter. Rest assured that as the flavors mature, the mineral detail also becomes more prominent, and they retain a very rigid structure.
At 16 years of age, this Riesling is still very refreshing. The fact that it's been bottled in the age-friendly magnum format doesn't hurt.
We'll keep this short today: We have such little wine, and Karthauserhof has such a big reputation. To order, please reply to this email quickly or call the store at (212) 980-9463.
