1995 López de Heredia Tondonia Gran Reserva

Posted by Ian McFadden

"This light-colored, ethereal 1995 is the essence of Viña Tondonia...

The profile follows the style of the great classics of the 1950s and 60s. Bottles like this are the ones that created the López de Heredia myth."-Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

The 1995 Tondonia Gran Reserva is a special wine. We've always loved the '95 vintage in Rioja. The traditionally minded producers turned out wines of power and grace. López's Tondonia takes things to a shocking level.

Luis Gutiérrez isn't out of line at all to situate the '95 among the legendary vintages of López.

I should warn you from the outset that this is a modestly sized parcel that we're expecting to sell out quickly. Last week, we offered López's Tondonia Blanco and it disappeared in a flash.

López is one of the great traditionalists of the wine world. Little about López de Heredia has changed in the 138 years since its founding. They are soulful, unyieldingly classic and indisputably noble wines. There's a level of nuance and complexity that few wines can compete with.

We've tasted Lopez back to the 40s and what happens to these bottles with age is spellbinding. Taste an old Lopez and there's little doubt of its breeding. The 1995 has incredible poise and finesse, and an amazing lifted presence.

Lopez de Heredia is one of the treasures of a bygone era. The 1995 is haunting and a vintage that will be remembered for decades.
