"Silk and lace in a glass."
1998 Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs
Drinking Now - and at the Lowest Price in the Nation
Today's offer is a quick sell out.
Let us count the reasons.
First, this is a benchmark producer - Angerville is one of Burgundy's most storied estates.
Second, the Clos des Ducs is the top wine of the collection and one of Volnay's greatest sites. Jacques d'Angerville liked to call the Clos des Ducs "the heart of Volnay," for its ageworthiness, for its incredible intensity and obvious breed.
The 1998 is our kind of Ducs. Why? Clarity, purity... nuance. Writes Mr. Burghound: "Reserved and understated in every respect with remarkable purity and precision in its delivery."
He finishes: “Silk and lace in a glass.”
The 1998 Ducs is drinking now and today it comes at a pretty fantastic value, too. At $144.95 this is the lowest price in the nation. We should probably just go ahead and state this here: Give us your maximum order and we'll do our best but we will likely have to allocate our parcel. I urge you to order quickly.
The Angerville wines are always, to me, among the most well-articulated in the Côte d’Or, rendering the voice of Volnay with all its intensity and precision, its mineral-driven accent and what the Burghound perfectly describes in the 98 Clos des Ducs as a “deceptive density.”
Angerville's wines are built to age - and to do so gracefully - and the 98 Ducs is, at 13 years old, just hitting its perfect peak, a study in grace and poise, though it will go strong for many, many years. Indeed, Clive Coates wrote very good things about the 98 red Burgundies in his “ten years on” vintage report, saying “there is much to enjoy, and plenty of scope for cellaring the best bottles for at least another decade.”
This is a spectacular parcel of a great wine. Please order quickly.

Burghound: "Reserved and understated in every respect with remarkable purity and precision in its delivery. The fruit is decidedly red in character followed by pronounced mineral notes, deceptive density and yet for all that, it is the intensity of the finish that really distinguishes this wine. The subtlety and harmony are quite impressive and it would be fair to say that it is the polar opposite of wines fashioned in the so-called modern school of Burgundy. Silk and lace in a glass."
