What Clos Vougeot Can Be
1999 Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot
At the Intersection of Geek and Collectible
This is one of the finest examples of Clos Vougeot, one of the finest examples of what the Mugneret sisters are capable of.
Clos Vougeot is a bit infamous.
To put it bluntly, this is a vineyard that often underperforms. It's a big vineyard (relatively speaking) and certain parcels just aren't deserving of their Grand Cru status.
On the other hand, when Clos Vougeot is good it is very good - nestled up against Musigny as it is, with a similar textural elegance, the suave, airy, satiny fruit can be among the most seductive out there.
Today we present a modern day legend, the Mugneret sister's 1999 Clos Vougeot, a wine that stands among the greatest Clos Vougeots out there (Leroy and Meo-Camuzet come immediately to mind).
This is an absurdly rare bottle of wine - there's only one other listing for this wine in the entire world. We have only a few cases to offer out, so this goes to a very small list of Burgundy fanatics - we will take all orders and then allocate as fairly as possible.
The Mugneret sisters' wines are among our absolute favorites and they have quickly gone from a rather geeky, under-the-radar producer to an estate of the verge of stardom, if they are not there already. The wines are disciplined and transparent, yet deep, with layer after layer of fine dark fruit, woven with minerals and herbs. They have a very distinct weight, a texture and feel to them, yet the absolute best (and their Clos Vougeot is certainly that) have an uncanny energy and extraordinary length.
The 1999 is a legend among their wines and when this small parcel came up, we just couldn't resist. The wine is just now coming into a glorious drinking window where it should stay for the next 5+ years.

Burghound: A very gentle touch of wood frames some secondary development on the complex, earthy and mildly spicy dark berry fruit nose that is very much in keeping with the round, delicious and gorgeously complex middle weight flavors that are underpinned by very sophisticated tannins that provide focus and firmness on the mouth coating and wonderfully long and intense finish. While this could be drunk now, I would advise cellaring the '99 for another 5 to 7 years first. Excellent.
