Twenty Years in the Cellar
1993 Lauer Riesling Sekt Reserve
Direct from the Winery, Recently Disgorged
A few months ago we offered out a rare recent disgorgement of Lauer's 1990 sparkling Riesling.
The response was quick and it was strong. The small cache of bottles we had was snapped up in a matter of minutes.
Today we offer a similar rarity - we expect a similar response. To take some of the pressure off, this offer goes out to a smaller, more focused list!
There's no way around the fact that, as before, this is one of our most unusual German offerings. It is also, however, one of the most compelling and fascinating.
While only three years separate the 1990 we offered previously and the 1993 we offer today, the wines are very different.
The 1990 was (is) a fuller wine, with very contrasting flavors - rich, mature Riesling flavors with a fine, vibrant core. The combination worked, but they did feel like almost distinct parts of the same wine. The 1993 is somewhat more integrated, the profile is plush yet compact, a suave tapestry of stone fruits with a perhaps more prominent mineral core - a more defined structure.
This bottle is a bit more for purists, more for those who love the focus and cut of the Saar.
The Saar has a long history in making sparkling wine. The region's finessed acidity makes it ideal for sparkling wine; the 1993 does not disappoint in this regard.
The style at Lauer is undeniable, and these wines have a signature. This is Riesling in its brightest, most transparent form.
Every bottle on offer today was in Lauer's cellar just a few months ago, where it had been for the previous two decades. As you can imagine, the cellar is not large - VERY FEW cases came into the U.S. and we've bought every single bottle we could.
These will go quickly!
