Gaja 2001 Sori San Lorenzo
Seductive, Ferocious, from Barbaresco
Lowest Pricing in the Nation on 2001 Piedmont Trophy
"The deepest and darkest of the single-vineyard wines from Barbaresco...a penetrating nose of tar and minerals along with very rich sweet dark fruit on a massive, structured frame of great thrust and length." - Wine Advocate
Today, we offer a *small* parcel of Gaja's meanest 2001 at the lowest price in the nation (lowest price in the world actually).
This will be short - a targeted offer only for those of you who have supported our "big red" wine program. All 2001 Gaja wine will be sold first come, first served.
For the passionate Italian collector, it doesn't get much better than this - the ultimate gift today comes "gift-wrapped" in wooden 6-packs. Ready for the cellar!
Is there a bigger, badder, darker, more savage red from Barbaresco? Probably not, though the deep concentration and muscle of this wine should not overwhelm the fact that with patience, with a "time out" in the cellar to let this bruiser calm down, the superb natural balance of this vintage will undoubtedly offer the 2001 Sorì San Lorenzo a determined elegance, a sinewy and seductive grace.
2001 is without a doubt the grand conclusion to the string of great years from 1996 on and as Piedmont fanatics look back across this lucky string of vintages, the 2001s are distinguishing themselves.
2001 is our kind of vintage: Massive extract from long (long) hangtimes, with finesse and a beautiful articulation. The 2001 Gajas especially, show a just fierce richness married to a riveting, taut architecture, stunning minerality (not unlike the best of 1996).
The Sorì San Lorenzo is a freight train of Nebbiolo, one of the most powerful of Gaja's single-vineyard reds. Along with the Sperss and Sori Tilden, this is a top dog in 2001.
These are wines, this is an estate, with an incredible international reputation. No one other than maybe Bruno Giacosa has done more to put the small region of Barbaresco on the international map. Galloni writes: "Gaja is revered as an almost God-like figure and most people here are so awed by his stature that they wouldn’t dare try to speak with him."
While Gaja goes against the "traditionalists" by using barriques in the fermentations and even adding a touch of Barbera for freshness, these are not plush, soft, fruit-forward wines meant to be consumed young. Indeed, some of the most rewarding older Piedmont reds I've had have come from Gaja. No one, aside from maybe Giacomo Conterno, has made more ageworthy, thundering, brooding wines.
We have only a few 6-packs to offer today - they are in stock and ready for the holiday season. To order, reply to this email or call the store at (212) 980-9463.

Wine Advocate: The 2001 Sori San Lorenzo is the deepest and darkest of the single-vineyard wines from Barbaresco. It boasts a penetrating nose of tar and minerals along with very rich sweet dark fruit on a massive, structured frame of great thrust and length. It is a wine that will clearly require patience and reward cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2025.
