"Champagne's Most Renowned Vineyard Site"
2002 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses
The Lowest and Only Price in the Nation
"Clos des Goisses is consistently one of the world's foremost wines... I recently held a complete vertical tasting of this personal wine. The Champagnes were amongst the most ravishing I have tasted." - Richard Juhlin, 4,000 Champagnes
Philipponnat's Clos des Goisses is a singular wine; the Clos des Goisses is a singular site.
Among the otherwise gentle, rolling hills of Champagne the Clos des Goisses is an anomaly. This is a 5.5-hectare site situated in the very hard, deep chalk of the Marne, staring perfectly south. This is one of the steepest slopes in all of Champagne, with a 30- to 45-degree gradient (the photograph below gives you some sense of this). During the harvest, nets are put up to catch workers who lose their footing and tumble down the hill.
Indeed, the Clos des Goisses has its own very distinct microclimate - it can get up to be to three degrees warmer than the rest of Champagne. Even in vintages where other vineyards struggle to ripen their grapes, the Goisses can deliver extraordinary depth and power.
This is why Peter Liem calls it, "Champagne's most renowned vineyard site."
The Clos des Goisses is also a legend among Champagne insiders: Along with Selosse's mighty creations and Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne, Philipponnat's Clos des Goisses is one of Champagne's most muscular incarnations, though the complexity of the minerality is what gives this wine such a fascination with decades and decades of age.
Indeed the Clos des Goisses is as much about earth and mineral as it is about fruit. Young Clos des Goisses are impenetrable, with an almost confoundingly dense core - Clos des Goisses requires time. Richard Juhlin reports on a 59 Goisses he drank in 2007 and named it "among the greatest wines I've ever tasted."
The reputation of the 2002 Champagnes is well known - there's no need to belabor here the prospective greatness of the 2002 Clos des Goisses. This will be an epic bottle with a decade or two or three under its belt. At this point, if you're able to find any, expect pricing to be double or triple today's tariff.
If the Clos des Goisses remains slightly under-the-radar, a wine for the more curious Champagne aficionado, we've had too many rapid sell-outs to have much confidence that this offer won't sell out today, and quickly.
