Rare Debut Vintage
2005 Foillard Fleurie
The Most Feminine Voice of Beaujolais
2005 Foillard Fleurie - this is a rare bird to say the least.
Finding any Beaujolais from the monumental 2005 vintage is hard enough, sourcing a parcel of Jean Foillard's 2005 Fleurie is something of a coup. After all, he farms a mere 2 hectares in Fleurie making this a much more elusive bottling than his legendary Morgon Cote du Py.
And while it's easy to say that a winemaker is deeply committed to site specificity, Foillard's 2005 Fleurie is a stunning example of terroir. The two bottlings couldn't be more different.
Compared with his Cote du Py, with its opulent cherry fruit, exotic spices and meaty notes, the Fleurie is exceedingly lithe, super-fine in its texture, a feminine delicacy appropriate for this Cru which is often referred to as the Queen of Beaujolais.Â
This is a bottle that Stephen, Ian and I drank together in awe. We expected a lot, and the wine delivered.
At times, the wine felt like the Platonic ideal of Fleurie with its silken plum fruits and charming elegance. Now a mere six years into its development, the wine is just beginning to reveal perfumed aromatics of strawberry and plums, mingling with a clear soil expression and mineral. Still, the wine is dense, compact, with a good amount of inherent tension. We'd expect Foillard's 2005 Fleurie to develop in the cellar for another 5 years - so if possible, try and grab two.
Foillard's Fleurie is sourced from sites of impressive pedigree: the climats of Grille Midi, La Madone and Champagne. The former two are held by many to be Fleurie's best sites. While this is a wine from a completely different Cru than his Morgon Côte du Py, the winemaking is exactly the same.Â
When I visited Foillard last summer, the first point he made was that each of his wines are made in exactly the same way. It's only the differences in terroir that account for the differences in the wines. While Foillard proves his point by lining up his different bottlings side by side when you're tasting with him (see picture above), you can carry out a similar experiment by pouring the 2005 Fleurie next to his 2009 Morgon Cote du Py. We'll even discount the Morgon for those who want to carry out their own Beaujolais Cru tasting - see below.
2005 Beaujolais from one of the regions legendary masters. So far as we can tell, these are the only bottles in the U.S. With the combination of rarity and great vintage, this will in all likelihood sell out very quickly. As usual, please give us your maximum order and we'll do our best - all orders subject to confirmation.
