Tuscan Pedigree Never Comes at this Price
2006 Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano
Back up the Truck for the Lowest Price in the Nation!
2006 in Tuscany was a vintage for the record books, and this is some of its absolute best-drinking Sangiovese...
as low as $12 a bottle.
As soon as we tasted Fattoria Le Pupille's juicy 2006 Morellino di Scansano, I knew it was going to be our new red, go-to value favorite.
This is a wine that screams of sun-soaked wild cherries and a countryside of wild flowers, a juicy red with all the personality and charm that has made Tuscan wines so popular the world over.
The staff was incredibly enthusiastic, so we took as much as we could in exchange for a price that vies for best wine deal of the year so far. Today we can offer this Tuscan treasure at up to 30% below the lowest price in New York.
This is a "Back Up the Truck" deal if ever there was one, a wine that speaks of a serious pedigree despite the low price we've been awarded. (When this parcel runs out, so does the price!)
The Fattoria Le Pupille, run by the charming Elisabetta Geppetti, is better known for its heavily-lauded Saffredi, one of the first reds to win praise and focus major attention on the coastal Tuscan region of Maremma in the 1990s. But even before Saffredi gained spots on top restaurant wine lists and in collectors' cellars, Geppetti was crafting her Morellino di Scansano and working to gain huge industry respect for the area and grape.
Maremma is known for making big, burly, forward wines from the Morellino strain of Sangiovese, and Geppetti's Morellino expresses this in the best way with opulent fruit and a decidedly masculine structure neatly tied up with ribbons of acidity and finesse.
Simply put: This is delicious wine that you keep on hand to drink - and be delighted by - whenever the mood strikes. Impromptu gatherings, that token after-work glass (or two), a complement to your quick pasta dish or a steak on the grill. We're always on the lookout for pleasing everyday-drinking wine, and this one more than exceeds our expectations.
The wow-factor with this wine comes in equal parts from Geppetti's meticulous winemaking and the stellar raw quality of the fruit out of the 2006 vintage. In the Wine Advocate, Antonio Galloni raves, "The best of these wines offer breathtaking richness in a style that marries ripeness with structure to a degree that has seldom, if ever, been seen in Tuscany."Â
And great Tuscan wine like this seldom, if ever, comes at this price. As I mentioned before, this is an outstanding wine from an outstanding vintage - a wine you can pop open without guilt or contemplation; a wine to keep on hand in quantity. Most of the region's 2006s need much more cellar time, but this will more than satisfy you while you wait for its peers to come around.
