"The 2007s here are pure magic, and amongst the very finest wines to be found up and down the Côte in this lovely vintage... I cannot recommend them highly enough."
-John Gilman, The View from the Cellar

This time of year, thoughts of Fourrier loom large for just about every Burgundy fanatic. This is the season when importer Neal Rosenthal receives his allocation of Fourrier and the feeding frenzy begins.

For 2007, the frenzy is likely to be considerable. Those who have tasted Fourrier's 2007s speak of an incredible marriage of producer and vintage: John Gilman's comments, above, are but one example. 2007 offered everything Jean-Marie needed and the collection has just incredible grace, clarity and such a tremendous nuance of expression.

Stephen Tanzer captures the essence of this vintage: "The best 2007s show a truly exhilarating characteristic I have rarely found in red Burgundy. They finish with an almost electric impression of lift and perfume, as if their fine tannins were sparkling on the palate like diamond dust."

Today, we are taking reservations on Jean-Marie Fourrier's 2007s at special pre-arrival pricing. All orders are subject to confirmation - preference will be given to balanced orders.

If there is one reason Fourrier's 2007s elevate the game, it's his late harvesting - a factor of both rigorous vineyard work and some serious nerves. 2007, if anything, was hard to predict. A downright hot April lead to an extremely early flowering; many growers predicted another big vintage like 2003. However, a very cool, rainy summer nearly stopped maturation in its tracks. Vineyards needed to be ruthlessly maintained to ensure the quality of fruit. Finally, the weather broke in the last week of August, offering the growers who had done their work through the summer to wait for physiological ripeness. Fourrier picked late, from September 9th to the 14th. As with other great recent vintages (think 2007 in Germany), 2007 in Burgundy is a vintage of long hang times - 120 days on average compared to 100.

This is a collection, from the Gevrey VV up to the Griotte, that offers the cherished Fourrier signature of bright, well-defined fruit, an excellent articulation of earth and mineral backed by an energetic and disciplined acidity. These are wines with the flesh and structure to develop beautifully for many years.

Please find complete tasting notes for all the 2007 Fourriers below. Given the reputation these wines have already established, we expect demand to be very high. We will confirm orders early next week - again, preference will be given to balanced orders!

2007 Domaine Fourrier

Gevrey-Chambertin VV
Special Email Price: $57.95

Compare at $70
Burghound: A trace of reduction does not block the relatively high-toned red berry fruit aromas that are also very Gevrey in basic character with ample animale, warm earth and underbrush nuances, all of which continue onto the supple, delicious and only moderately rustic flavors that coat the palate with extract. This is very well balanced and offers just a bit more length. This too is definitely worth a look.

Gevrey-Chambertin "Aux Echezeaux"
Special Email Price: $57.95
Compare at $70
Burghound: Here the reduction is relatively strong though the supple, detailed and minerally flavors are pungently earthy with notes of underbrush and game that give this a strong Gevrey character. The tannins are firm and the finish delivers fine length. Again, a quality villages that is worth a look.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Les Cherbaudes
Special Email Price: $92.95
Compare at $114
Burghound: Here the nose is also very Gevrey in character with an intensely earthy nose of wild red berry fruit aromas liberally sprinkled with jerky, underbrush and a pungent iron-like element that can also be found on the sleekly muscled flavors, all wrapped in a long, sappy and delicious finish. This should benefit from 6 to 8 years of cellar time.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Les Champeaux
Special Email Price: $97.95
Compare at $122
Burghound: A strikingly layered nose of plum, earth, smoked jerky and forest floor complements the rich, full and relatively generous medium plus weight flavors that possess perhaps the best phenolic maturity to this point and culminate in a velvety, long and mouth coating finish. This is a lovely effort and recommended.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Combe aux Moines
Special Email Price: $97.95
Compare at $122
Burghound: A pure, elegant and relatively high-toned red berry fruit nose reveals undertones of earth and even a hint of game that can also be found on the powerful, big, rich and robust flavors that possess real size and weight, especially in the context of the 2007 vintage that delivers more punch on the sappy and admirably long finish. This is an impressively-scaled effort that delivers outstanding length. In a word, terrific.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos St Jacques
Special Email Price: $149.95
Compare at $179
Burghound: A seriously pretty nose of earthy yet high-toned and cool red berry fruit aromas that offer subtle spice hints and a touch of underbrush that merge seamlessly into elegant and very fine mineral-infused middle weight flavors that are rich, intense and possess solid mid-palate concentration. I very much like the poise this wine displays as it's harmonious, transparent and beautifully well-balanced. This is a gorgeous combination of energy, balance and harmony. In short, this is a stunner.

Griotte-Chambertin
Special Email Price: $209.95
Compare at $228
Burghound: A restrained and if not backward, then at least relatively reticent nose of subtly spicy red berry and black cherry fruit trimmed in touches of wood, herb and smoke precedes solidly concentrated and powerful medium full-bodied and well-focused flavors underpinned by moderately firm tannins and plenty of underlying tension as you can really sense the energy here. A seriously lovely wine that has that Zen-like sense of harmony to it.
