New-Release Barolo Falletto
2007 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto (White Label)
"The 2007 Baroli are some of the most viscerally thrilling young wines I have ever tasted."

"An overachieving wine, even at this high level."
-Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate

After the drought, the rain comes.

For Giacosa fans, the recent past has been tough. In 2006 the estate released no Barolos or Barbarescos, shorting a market where demand was already high.

Today we bring some relief: The new release of the exuberant, glorious 2007 Giacosa Falletto Barolo, sharply priced.

This is the regular bottling, the "white label" as they're called, yet in 2007 expect more. Not exactly the über-density of the riserva "red labels," but something in between.

Giacosa "pink label"?

Writes Galloni of the 07 Falletto: "The bouquet has a level of delineation, sweetness, inner perfume and nuance generally only found in Giacosa’s Red Label Riservas."

This is a simply stunning Falletto, the vintage giving the wine an incredible density, saturation... raw material that brings together a layered, fleshy, sappy opulence, along with buoyancy and vivid aromatics.

A bit of text from Galloni's summary of the vintage is worth reviewing: "The 2007 Baroli are some of the most viscerally thrilling young wines I have ever tasted. The 2007s are similar to the 2004s, but with more substance. The wines are radiant, intensely perfumed and totally seductive, yet not at all heavy, in a style that offers the textural richness of a warm vintage with the aromatics of a cool year."

Giacosa's style seems to aways bring together the extremes. His Barolos are lavish, polished and sexy and about as in-your-face seductive as Nebbiolo can ever be. Yet they are by no means "style over substance" - there is transparency, focus, rigor.

Giacosa's little plot of Falletto vines in the Serralunga commune has a high limestone content, which accentuates this rigidity, this structure. While this is a vintage that, so far at least, seems to be fairly friendly in youth (with a long, long decant), have no doubt these will go the distance - Galloni gives the 2007 Falletto a drinking window of 2017-2032.

For this reason, we've gone even lower on the pricing for those who can put a 6-pack in the cellar.

Giacosa is one of our favorite producers. The estate is one of the icons of the Piedmont that we offer every year (along with Giacomo Conterno and Guiseppe Mascarello) and nearly always the wines sell out very, very quickly.
