2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Labels
The New Release from California's Cult Winemaker
"Tasting here is one of the highlights of my year, and all my expectations were satisfied if not eclipsed by what Krankl has made in 2007 and 2006." - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Today we present a California wine coup: The newest release from Sine Qua Non, the Labels Syrah, at a very sharp price.
We have only a few cases to offer, so this email goes out only to those of you who have supported our cult wine program. (Membership has its privileges!)
It is hard to overstate the significance of Sine Qua Non, Manfred Krankl's winemaking-as-art project. Sine Qua Non has reinvigorated, and to a large extent redefined, California winemaking.
If the formula for greatness in California at one time required a Napa address (beautiful Chateau with fountains a plus), a rockstar winemaker and an obsession with Cabernet Sauvignon, Manfred Krankl has reinvented just about everything. Manfred's hunting ground is California's Central Coast; his wines explore the seductions of Syrah and Grenache.
Today, without any decorative fountains let alone a chateau, many believe Sine Qua Non is California's greatest producer. Yet Manfred's yearly output is a few thousand cases, most of which is immediately sucked up by the mailing list, making them some of the most difficult Californians to find. Even now, the waiting list for Sine Qua Non is impenetrable - the last we heard, it was estimated at about 10 years.
To put it bluntly (and to echo Robert Parker's quote, above), Krankl's work in 2007 was exceptional - the "Labels" Syrah stands to be a monument among monuments. Yields were very low, even within the near-ludicrous standards set by Krankl: Parker reports Krankl's yields somewhere around 1.5 to 2 tons of fruit per acre!
Parker's barrel tasting note below only hints at the fullness to come, the true signature of Sine Qua Non is unmistakable: A jaw-dropping over-the-top intensity that somehow (someway) attains a monumental balance and glacial finesse. Ferociousness, with grace.
These are wines as unique as they are rare, as rare as they are coveted. To order, email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463. Please give us your maximum order and we will do our best to allocate accordingly; all orders subject to confirmation.

2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah "Labels"
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Not Yet Named Syrah will be released in Spring, 2010. A blend of 89% Syrah, 7% Grenache, and 4% Viognier from four separate vineyards (the estate vineyards – 11 Confessions and Cumulus, and the two vineyards where Krankl purchases fruit – Whitehawk and Bien Nacido), this dense purple-hued offering displays a beautiful bouquet of graphite, spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, and wood spice. It possesses fabulous fruit, layers of silky tannin, and good acidity – all seamlessly melded into the wine’s structure. Already delicious, it should put on weight and add additional nuances after bottling."
Wine arrives later this month!
