All Meursault is Not Created Equal
2008 Coche-Dury Meursault
"The Meursault by which all others are measured."
- Andrew Jefford
This has to be one of the most expensive village-level wines in Burgundy.
This is one of the few Burgundies that simply transcends any notion of the traditional Burgundian hierarchy.
The most relevant comparisons we can think of are the village-level wines of Lalou Bize-Leroy. Her Vosne-Romanée Aux Genaivrière, a simple "village wine" by definition, is a Burgundian thoroughbred. A wine that is sought out by the most serious collectors and easily fetches $300-$500 a bottle. Bobby and I opened a 1988 Genaivrière about a year ago and it was simply outrageous - at 20 years of age this was a profound, profound bottle.
Expect a similar level of depth and complexity here: Coche's Meursault is a powerhouse, a gushing wine with layer upon layer of fruit, mineral and flower. This is a bottle that will seriously embarrass many 1er Cru Meursault; it will also overwhelm many Grand Crus from the Côte de Beaune. You can also expect a similar lifespan: Especially in this ruthlessly structured and pure vintage, Coche's 2008 Meursault will develop and improve for a decade or longer.
If you have the means, Coche's $800+ Premier Cru Perrieres is one of the supreme treasures of Burgundy... of white wine. Please indulge. For the rest of us, the village-level Meursault is perhaps a more real possibility.
It's worth noting that Coche's 2008s are simply blockbuster. The wines are incredibly intense - lit up with the bolts of acidity that signal vivacity and longevity as well as squeezed full of ripe and pure white, yellow and orange fruits. There's a chalky grip of minerality here, too, as well as Coche's signature, undeniably seductive spice.
This is nothing less than a HUGE parcel of Coche-Dury - and by that we mean of course only a few cases.
