The King of Chardonnay's Cult Pinot
2008 Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru
Santenots du Milieu
Nearly 20% Off the Lowest Price in the Nation
For most, Comtes Lafon is defined by their epic whites, the $1,000+ Montrachet and Meursault 1er Crus.
Which is fair enough. These are fine, fine wines.
Yet, the estate also makes a small amount of red wines from a number of sites in Volnay. In the context of this estate (see Montrachet pricing above!) and the greatest wines of Volnay, these are a steal.
Today, we present the greatest red wine in the Lafon stable, the 1er Cru Volnay Santenots at as low as $93.33. This is over $20 below the lowest price in the nation.
Lafon's Santenots is probably the most textured and muscular Volnay out there - the only Volnay that might give it a run for its money is Angerville's 1er Clos des Ducs. The climat, one of Volnay's best, is filled with heavy red clay soils, which gives the wine its uncommon breadth and size.
This is one of those wines that tasted blind, could be mistaken for Gevrey-Chambertin or Chambolle, were it not for the super-fine texture, the extreme focus and directness with which the wine glides over the palate.
Clive Coates says Santenots has a "lush sensuality."
For all this texture and richness, the magic here is the transparency: Lafon's Santenots always has a just ridiculous clarity, as if both soil and stone were pulverized into the wine itself. In 2008, this clarity is in full-force. I loved the wine when I tasted it this summer in Burgundy. While the Burghound's review is good, it's not quite as glowing as I would have expected - I can't offer any other explanation than the wine must have been shut down. Antonio Galloni's review, also below, captures the wine a bit better in my opinion.
As does Galloni's estimated life for this wine, which goes to 2033. This is big-boned Volnay and therefore it does need time. I opened a 2002 Santenots in February and it was still painfully young, even after a long decant. With all the rigor and purity the 2008 has, I would expect this wine to have a very, very long life.
For this reason, we've included 3-pack pricing, so, if you have room in the cellar, grab as much as you can. It's rainy and miserable in NYC, but still... we expect a sell out today. Give us your maximum order and we'll allocate - subject to confirmation.

Burghound: "As it usually is, this possesses the most elegant nose of the group with a layered, spicy and lightly floral red berry fruit nose that complements the delicious, rich and round flavors that are finer still as are the supporting tannins on the lingering finish. The structural elements appear to be fully ripe and I like the underlying sense of minerality."
Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Volnay-Santenots is incomparably classy. Dark berries, spices and licorice are some of the nuances that emerge from this strikingly pure, beautiful wine. The Santenots possesses marvelous integrity and fabulous overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033."
