2008 Boulay Sancerre La Comtesse
A Hedonist's Vatan or Cotat?
The 4th Vintage of this Sancerre Super-Cuvée

Limited - Special Offer for Loire Supporters Only!

Boulay's Sancerre super-cuvée "Comtesse" is a simply outrageous expression of Sauvignon Blanc.

This bottle is a Loire legend in the making - based on the fact that we've sold out of this wine in less than 24 hours for each of the last three vintages we've offered, many of you seem to agree.

Today, we've held the pricing on the flat-out blockbuster 2008 Boulay "Comtesse" - only for those of you who have supported our Loire program in the past!

I spent a week in the Loire in November, tasting widely and to my palate 2008 in the Loire will be another 1996 or 2002. It is a great vintage that holds in tension a crispness and precision along with a serious concentration and richness. This great paradox holds true for the wines' drinking windows as well: My best guess is the 2008s will drink fantastically young though they will also make old bones for those of you who want to cellar (especially top cuvées like the "Comtesse").

The 2008 "Comtesse" is one of the grandest I have tasted. Sourced from 50-year-old vines in Sancerre's famed "Monts Damnés" vineyard, only a few barrels are made each year. I've written before that the "Comtesse" is to Sancerre what Ferrari is to automobiles, or Mario Cippolini was to the pro cycling peloton. The 2008 only ups this "wow" factor.

It is a wine that combines so much of the past vintages. The 2005 was dazzling, full-throttle, technicolor, satiny and luscious. The 2006 was ripe as all get-out while the 2007 showed more definition, a denser yet crisper palate. The 2008 is less exotic than the 2005 and 2006, though still as intense - it just feels more focused, with a sweet, Chenin nose, plenty of classic warm lemon curd and minerals.

On the palate, the explosive razor-fireworks of the 2007 are more subtle, even more refined in the 2008, lime supported by a bright and cooling chalky-white minerality. There is a deep intensity here but also an incredible lightness of being and cut. The 2008, somehow, feels both flashy and ethereally elegant.

While we've steadily built our allocation with the help of your support over the past three vintages, still, there is just not much of this wine made. As in the past, quantities are still so limited that we've had to focus this offering *only* to those of you who have supported our Loire Valley program.

This lux-cuvée Sancerre has put Gérard Boulay on the same level as Sancerre's finest producers, right up there with "Sancerre Savants" Edmond Vatan, the Cotats and Thomas-Labaille - and dare I say, even the famous rebel of Pouilly-Fumé, the late Didier Dagueneau?

For Loire fanatics, this is a bottle to reckon with. To order, email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store as soon as possible at (212) 980-9463.
