2009 Bouchard Clos de Beze: Lowest Price in the Nation

Long-Haul Bèze (Just for the Loyalists)
2009 Bouchard Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
Grand Cru Deal - Lowest Price in the Nation

Bouchard's Clos de Bèze has reemerged as a benchmark for the famous site.

Bouchard has experienced nothing less than a Renaissance in the last decade. The massive investment by Henriot along with inspired winemaking by Philippe Prost has paid serious dividends.

To be more specific: the only reference point for today's offer is Eric Rousseau's Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and expect this wine, if you ever come across any, to be in the $1,200-$1,500 per bottle range.

Today, we offer Bouchard's simply awesome 2009 Bèze at $209.95. Hopefully this puts the deal in its proper context. There are only a handful of retailers that have any stock of this wine and we're the lowest price by a good amount.

That said, no surprise, we do not have much of this wine and so this offer goes out only to the Burgundy loyalist.

The style at Bouchard is about muscle, power with clarity. Bouchard's greatest wines share something of that jewel-box transparency and purity of fruit that Drouhin or Faiveley or Fourrier manages.

In 2009 they achieved some great, great things - finding structure, a sort of serene balance and calm power with very, very impressive intensity - all this in the face of an exuberant, gregarious and richly fruited vintage.

This is especially true in the more “austere” sites and this is why the Bèze and Le Corton impressed us so much - to say nothing of the incredible value they offer for this rather pricey vintage. And if the common conception is that the 2009s will be ready for drinking a bit sooner, the Clos de Bèze will still demand at least a decade to come into its own. The Burghound, in fact, caps his enthusiastic review (see below for the full note) with the advice: “note carefully that it will need an ample amount of it to arrive at its full potential.”

In tasting through the 2009s from Bouchard, I think this will offer up plenty before that, though I won’t disagree with him that in 20 years this should be screaming.

Bouchard has returned to the head of the pack in Burgundy and pricing will eventually catch up, there's just no question there. For the moment, however, the value is serious. We expect this to sell out very quickly, so please respond with your maximum request and we’ll make allocations if necessary.

Burghound: "A strikingly spiced and highly perfumed nose of ripe yet cool red berry fruit, wet stone, underbrush and a hint of animale merges gracefully into highly complex and gorgeously intense flavors that also brim with minerality and plenty of extract on the palate staining and stunningly long finish. This has the potential to be great in time but note carefully that it will need an ample amount of it to arrive at its full potential."
