The 09 Burgundy Campaign Begins!
"Really, really good things are happening here... do yourself a favor and take a look - I believe that you will also be impressed." - Burghound
Today it begins: 2009 Burgundy.
As you know, we are Burgundy fanatics. This is a day we've been waiting for: The first tranche of the heavily anticipated 2009 red Burgundies.
This is the first vintage since 2005 to come out of the gates with such a seduction of fruit, such ripe flesh and tannin. I spent a week in Burgundy this July previewing the vintage, and these wines are seriously impressive. They have fantastic concentrations, a lavish ripeness matched to a depth of fruit that is blanketing, textured and long... yet, for all this seductive fruit, the structure is both very fine and very sturdy.
All of which puts us in a rather fortunate (and rare) position: This vintage will present some of the greatest young Burgs to come along in a long time; yet, if you can forget about a few in the cellar... expect very, very good things.
Today we begin with the historic Domaine Faiveley, a Burgundian institution with a style that speaks of tradition, transparency and endurance. Clive Coates has a perfect phrase for Faiveley: “Definitive examples of Pinot Noir.”
In 2005, the young and enterprising Erwan Faiveley took over the family domaine, and if the style at the domiane was ever a bit rustic, a bit rough around the edges in youth, Erwan has made some smart upgrades in the winery and the cellar to smooth these out without compromising their longevity. These are perhaps the most polished, refined and (especially in 2009) the most seductive Faiveleys in quite a few decades.
This has not gone unnoticed (word travels fast in Burgundy). The Burghound flatly writes: “Really, really good things are happening here.”
Though Faiveley certainly has a distinct style, these aren’t stylized wines - they avoid signs of over-intervention and, in fact, in the last few vintages, these have spoken more and more clearly of their superior terroir.
Today we present a selection of the very best from Faiveley in 2009, at some of the sharpest (if not THE sharpest) pricing out there. Our focus is on the Grand Crus, though we'd be remiss not to offer the superb Gevrey 1er Cru Combes aux Moines and Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Les St.-Georges.
