Grand Cru Renaissance
2009 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays
One of the Grand Cru Values of 2009
"The 2009 Clos des Lambrays is a brilliant example of the vintage and is destined to be one of the reference point grand crus of the vintage." - John Gilman, View from the Cellar
That last line is probably worth repeating: "One of the reference point Grand Crus of the vintage."
While Gilman's verbiage is very, very positive, the Burghound is not shy either. The full note is below, but you'll come across phrases like, "perfect balance" and "impressively persistent finish. A classic Clos des Lambrays."
Have no doubt, Domaine des Lambrays is definitively back... yet for the moment, the pricing has not caught up.
Which puts today's offer in a very good position: 2009 Clos des Lambrays at $139.95 a bottle.
With the great Grand Crus of 2009 likely to set new records as they hit the market this spring, summer and fall, the 2009 Lambrays is only going to seem like more of a steal as time goes on. This is Burgundy, however, so our parcel will not last that long. Just a word of warning - act quickly if you are interested!
Lambray's reemergence started a decade ago. The 1999 grabbed some serious attention after a lackluster few decades. The 2005 got people to really start tuning in again, and each consecutive vintage from there on has been superb. The 2008 was rocking, and, as Gilman says in his review, the 2009 has the guts to become one of the benchmarks of this very, very good vintage.
There is an embarrassment of riches in 2009; the trick is to suss out the best quality-to-price ratio. Which is where today’s wine comes into extraordinarily sharp focus.
When Bobby and I visited Burgundy this last summer, what really struck me was just how delicious the 09s were already - and they weren’t even in bottle yet. Yet, for all this immediate gratification, this hedonism and ripe fruit, these wines very obviously have the stuffing to AGE.
For everyone from the seasoned Burgundy collector to someone looking to begin a collection, this is a bottle to consider. For the quality, for the vintage, this has one of the best quality to price ratios I've seen yet.
Make no mistake, as these 09s continue coming to market, and as they age, the pricing on the big boys like today’s will only go up, while availability will go way, way down. We strongly urge you to place your maximum order today and make some room in the cellar.

Burghound: "An intensely floral and spicy nose that is wonderfully elegant and admirably pure speaks of red currant, blue berry, game, smoke and warm earth. The silky-textured, precise and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess copious extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannins and allowing for perfect balance on the mouth coating and impressively persistent finish. A classic Clos des Lambrays that should be approachable within a decade yet last for 25 to 40 years."
