"At the risk of being guilty of heaping more hyperbole upon the existing hyperbole, the Bachelet 2010s are the equals of his brilliant '09s" -Burghound

Denis Bachelet is one of those perfectionist producers that we can't get enough of.

Everything at this tiny 4ha domaine feels elevated. His Charmes-Chambertin introduces you to a new realm of potential for the Grand Cru; his Bourgogne Rouge and Gevrey can startle with the heights they take these humble appellations.

The 1er Cru Corbeaux is an under-the-radar plot of vines sandwiched between the Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin and the village of Gevrey-Chambertin itself. Bachelet's Corbeaux comes from vines that are very old, ranging from 60 to 70 years.

The old vines begin to explain why Bachelet's Corbeaux is a powerful, deep and complex wine (it really does come near Charmes in the weight it can throw around) - it always shows an impressive concentration and Gevrey's typical muscle, but it carries its weight effortlessly, leaving an impression of delicacy and discreetness. Corbeaux may be Bachelet's most overlooked wine.

To miss the 2010 edition would be a mistake. The vintage offers a crystal clear expression of what I think of as the soul of Bachelet's Corbeaux - a deep and powerful expression of dark fruits with topsoil notes backed by a firm acid core. The 2010 Corbeaux shows the intensity, precise structure and overall harmony that enables Bachelet's Corbeaux to age so beautifully. Almost every bottle of old Bachelet Corbeaux that I've tasted has left a deep impression on me - the way it evolves to such a depth of complexity and refinement is extraordinary.

It's early to make this call, but at this point it seems fair to say that Bachelet's 2010s, along with his 2005s, represent Bachelet's strongest vintage of the past ten years.

Of course the constant problem with Bachelet is availability - it's particularly ugly in the low-yielding 2010 vintage.

Burghound: "A deft touch of wood sets off spicy, dense and well-layered aromas of plum and black cherry liqueur that precede impressively extract-rich and mouth coating flavors that possess a velvety texture on the powerful and persistent finish. Despite the presence of so much extract the finish evidences a slight austerity that reminds one that this is definitely a classic Gevrey from a cool terroir. At least a decade of patience will be required."
