The estate of J.J. Prüm occupies a rather curious space in the world of German wine.
For the younger generation, the storied Prüm estate with its somber mansion and sun-dialed label can feel a bit like a relic. These are the German wines your father collected. He drank them, no doubt, in the study, after dinner, with a leather-bound book in one hand and a pipe in the other.
In a way, it's the estate's unquestionable stature in the pantheon of German winemaking that can make those looking for a new thrill, some 21st Century razzle-dazzle, yawn a bit.
At the same time, there are simply no German wines more proven than these. For myself personally, among the older German Rieslings I've drunk, there is simply no other producer who has crafted more reliably GREAT wines than the estate of J.J. Prüm.
A recent dinner we organized with some friends/clients at Lotus of Siam in NYC put this fact in very sharp focus: 1976 and 1983 Gold Capsule Auslesen, 1971 and 1949 Beerenauslesen. Every single bottle was awesome, though some triumphant symphony or epic poem should be written for the 1971 BA which was simply from another planet.
And so we return to the undeniable: Few German wines have as much potential as the great Rieslings of J.J. Prüm.
The style at Prüm has not changed for decades: These are among the deepest and most and pure and sexy Rieslings the Mosel produces; their balance is flawless and their form is extraordinarily sensual, with long flowing curves and incredible filigree.
As for the 2010ers, as misunderstood as this vintage is, I have heard very good things about Prüm's collection. (For those who would like to read my 2010 German Vintage Report, click here.)
While some of the more dripping accounts I've come across have to be filed as hyperbole and/or manic-salesmanship, there is good reason to be very, very excited about the 2010 Prüms.
First, the vintage combines serious density, ripeness and extract with muscular acidities in a way that has simply never before taken place. If you haven't heard the phrase "unprecedented" used in reference to the 2010 vintage in Germany, let me go ahead and use it: "Unprecedented." There.
Second, the vintage is unquestionable weighted towards the Baroque masterpieces - think Auslesen. Prüm excels in this area in a way few others do. Yes, these wines require a patience that is not particularly in line with our 21st Century pace, but they are worth the wait. Please consider cellaring as many of these wines as you can.
But consider doing so with some rapidity.
One of Prüm's U.S. importers sent out their pre-arrival pricing, and then 48 hours later announced that they were basically sold out and that was that. This is a short vintage for Prüm.
Our special futures prices remain valid until Friday or until the wines sell out, whichever comes first.
