2012 Domaine du Collier Saumur Rouge
La Ripaille & La Charpentrie
In 1999 at 26 years old, Antoine Foucault left his family's domaine and founded one of his own.
This was an especially bold move when your family's domaine is Clos Rougeard. Antoine's father is Charly Foucault, who sadly passed away at the end of last year, and his uncle is Nady Foucault.
With a deep knowledge of the area, Antoine set out to secure prime terroir with old vines. He focused his energy on Brézé, one of the greatest sites in all of the Loire.
Almost immediately, the wines gained a cult following in France for their level of depth and sophistication. Word quickly spread and Collier has become intensely allocated and hard to find.
Today, I'm happy to offer two reds from Brézé, 2012 La Ripaille & La Charpentrie.
Brézé has enjoyed centuries and centuries of fame. Its clay and limestone soils produce wines of shocking class, ageability and vividness.
Starting with La Ripaille, this is the earthier and darker in profile of the two wines. However, there's also floral and spice notes that provide beautiful lift to the wine. La Charpentrie is from the estate's oldest vines (they're 100 years old) and the wine boasts the depth that comes from old vines along with a captivating, energetic core.
The 2012 vintage gives both wines a brightness and liveliness while delivering plenty of concentration and complexity.
Collier's wines are very difficult to find in quantity. When it comes to the reds, it's even worse: only one-third of the domaine is planted with Cabernet Franc. This is a modest sized parcel and one that's sure to sell out.
