2012 Willi Schaefer
Kabinett & Spätlesen
I can't help but approach this email with a sense of excitement and dread.
I'm excited, because 2012 is looking like a great vintage for Willi Schaefer. However, I can already imagine the headache this offer will bring when it quickly sells out and we have to go through and allocate.
With only 4ha and a huge following, Schaefer is never in good supply, but the combination of low yields and there being no Wehlener Sonnenhuhr for commercial release has made 2012 even more limited than usual.
This offer is only going out to those of you who've supported Schaefer in the past. Still, allocations seem inevitable. Please keep in mind that it will likely take 24 hours to let the dust settle and respond to orders.
There's no reason to fan the fire here, but a few things should be said. Over the years, I've only become more and more impressed by just how profound Schaefer's wines are - how detailed, fine and graceful they are. They very well may be without peers in these categories.
I can't tell you how many times Schaefers have shared the table with German heavy hitters, like Egon Müller and JJ Prum, and the Schaefer wines stole everyone's attention.
For Schaefer fans, 2012 is a don't miss vintage. 2012 is defined by the way it combines purity, concentration and a sense of agility. They are just gorgeous wines.
The heart of the 2012 vintage is at the Spätlese and Auslese level, but that didn't stop Schaefer from producing painfully small amounts of Kabinett. The Domprobst on offer today may be on the bigger side of Schaefer's classic Kabinett style, but it's still light on its feet and the balance is really impressive.
The Himmelreich Spätlese also shows a beautiful lightness and slate-y purity - this is a really good vintage for this wine. Finally, there's the two Domprobst Spätlesen, #10 and #5. The Spätlese #5 is the richer and more layered of the two and #10 is slightly more linear and has its minerality at the forefront.
To repeat, these are extremely limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

Graacher Domprobst Kabinett
Special Email Bottle Price: $26.95
John Gilman: "As one would expect, the 2012 Domprobst Kabinett has a bit broader shoulders than the Himmelreich, but it too is finished off quite dry and really displays its Kabinett personality in this slightly more powerful guise. The lovely nose offers up scents of tangerine, pink grapefruit,a lovely base of slate, gentle notes of citrus peel and a bit of smokiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, crisp and succulent on the attack, with a fine core, superb focus and excellent length and grip on the pure and classy finish."
Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese
Special Email Bottle Price: $35.95
John Gilman: "There is only one Spätlese from the Himmelreich in 2012 and it is absolutely lovely. The very pure and expressive bouquet delivers scents of lime, green apple, kaleidoscopic minerality, a touch of violet and an esthery topnote of bee pollen. On the palate the wine is fullish, elegantand quite filigreed, with an excellent core of fruit, ripe acids and excellent focus and grip on the very long and dancing finish. This is just a stunning synthesis of the inherent elegance of the 2012 vintage and the glorious purity and minerality of the Himmelreich vineyard!"
Graacher Domprobst Spätlese #10
Special Email Bottle Price: $36.95
John Gilman: "The AP #10 Spätlese from the Domprobst is a superb example of the vintage, with all of the purity and inherent elegance of the vintage very much in evidence on both the nose and palate. The excellent nose jumps from the glass in a mix of tangerine, white grape, clementines, gentle notes of petrol, plenty of slate and a nice topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish, pure and beautifully focused, with a superb core, ripe acids and superb backend, slatey minerality driving the very long and perfectly balanced finish. A beautiful wine in the making, and probably a Spätlese that will demand a few years of bottle age before it really starts to drink well."
Graacher Domprobst Spätlese #5
Special Email Bottle Price: $45.95
John Gilman: "The 2012 AP #5 Spätlese from the Domprobst is a brilliant wine in the making. The stunning bouquet is a blend of lime, orange, pink grapefruit, citrus peel, plenty of slate and a floral topnote redolent of lilac blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and an absolute mineral bath from the mid-palate back, with a great core of fruit, laser-like focus, snappy acids and great backend mineral drive on the very long and very refined finish. A simply magical bottle of young Spätlese!"
