In 2014, Willi Schaefer made a tiny amount of spätlesen. They released just over 1,000 liters of Himmelreich.

This very small amount is made worse by the fact that the only other spätlese went to auction.

Essentially, you're looking at just over a hundred cases of non-auction spätlese for the world. I know it's stating the obvious, but few producers in Germany are as loved as Schaefer. It's an ugly scenario in terms of availability, which is made clear by the fact that this is only available two other places in the U.S.

Schaefer turned out gorgeous 2014s, and the Himmelreich Spätlese is especially impressive. Himmelreich's calling card is always a sharp, saline and slate-y cut with a dancing slate inflected lightness. The 2014 adds an extra dimension of textural depth that carries complex and ultra-fine notes of stone fruits, flowers, spice and citrus. Everything feels perfectly calibrated and beautifully elegant.

The 2014 Himmelreich will age beautifully. Over the years, we've been fortunate enough to drink plenty of old bottles of Schaefer and it's clear that they age with the best of Germany. They are so pure, agile and detailed.

I'm going to wrap this up with a warning: We're expecting a rapid sell out. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
