Willi Schaefer's 2016 collection are some of the top examples of the pristine nature of the vintage.
In any vintage, Schaefer's Kabinett wines thrive on an unparalleled fineness. The 2016 Domprobst Kabinett is an especially dramatic example of this.
I have a major soft spot for Schaefer's Kabinetts. With age, they become hauntingly elegant. Out of the line-up, it's the Domprobst Kabinett that seems to age the longest and best. Domprobst is the site that offers the most layered yellow fruits all wrapped around a steely mineral core. We've had bottles of Domprobst Kabinett with 15 or 20 years of age that have been gorgeous.
The 2016 Domprobst Kabinett has serious cut and a lifted, finessed delicacy, which offers the perfect counterpoint to its complex, spice-inflected profile. There's an incredible persistence and precision to the wine and the lithe frame is packed with lots of nuanced complexity.
The 2016 vintage in Germany saw a rainy first half and nearly ideal weather for the remainder. August brought warm temperatures encouraging good ripeness levels and fall allowed for long leisurely harvesting with cool nights that crystallized the wine's wonderful clarity of fruit.
Schaefer's 2016s dazzle with their purity. It's always exciting to be able to offer the Domprobst Kabinett. Schaefer is a small estate and landing the Domprobst Kabinett in quantity is difficult. It's well worth the effort as it's always a highlight of the lineup.
