Nearly a decade ago, we launched the first email about this estate we had just discovered: “Weingut Peter Lauer.”
One of the first lines of our email, if not subtle, feels prescient now: “We declare, without hesitation, that Weingut Lauer is the most exciting German find in many years."
And the wine that introduced the U.S. to this revolutionary estate was none other than Lauer’s dry-tasting “Senior.” This yearly offering has become one of our biggest annual offerings.
As we’ve written many times, this is simply one of the greatest values in white wine, period. It is a wine we love; a wine that the staff drinks by the case-load.
For those who loved the electricity of the 2016, prepare for a similar mouth-watering jolt with the 2017. With the 2017 "Senior," we have a bit more ripeness as well as nearly a gram more acidity.
The balance is extraordinary: lush yet fine-layered fruit, from taut citrus to stone fruit, interwoven with a kaleidoscopic flurry of green herbs and book-ended by an avalanche of slate. This is a “Senior” to be reckoned with, combining the transparency of the 2016 with the power of the 2015.
While Florian Lauer was basically unknown (at least in the U.S.) a decade ago; today Lauer is considered one of Germany’s greatest winemakers. Despite this acclaim, Lauer’s prices have risen very little – we are able to offer the 2017 “Senior” at nearly the same price as we offered the 2007.
While the prices have not risen that much, demand has. Thus the wines sell out immediately. Already at the estate, final allocations of “Senior” are being made and the tranche we have secured will be our first, and our last.
