2019 D'Angerville:
Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets & Clos des Ducs

Posted by Ian McFadden

D'Angerville's 2019s are stunning.

Even in the context of the 2019, this is a don't miss collection. Whenever the vintage comes up, people always mention d'Angerville as one of the greats.

Today, I'm happy to offer two high points of the collection - the 1er Crus Caillerets and Clos des Ducs.

D'Angerville's Caillerets is a wine I seek out every vintage, but with only 0.7ha in Caillerets it’s always the hardest wine to lock down in quantity. It captures the racy, emphatically mineral side of Volnay with pinpoint precision and refinement.

The 2019 Caillerets is simply a dazzling Burgundy full of finesse, tension, and subtle depth. There's a jaw-dropping amount of clarity and soaring elegance. The amount of lift, detail, and subtle complexity announces that this is an extraordinary vintage for the Caillerets.

Clos des Ducs produces some of the most intense, mineral-driven, and deeply complex examples of red Burgundy. The 2.4-hectare monopole can trace its roots back at least 500 years. It has a high elevation at 324 meters and is a steep, south-east facing slope with chalky soils. Simply put, Clos des Ducs is a special site.

The 2019 Ducs is epic. Burghound nails the wine when he simply sums it up as "brilliant."  The wine works at an incredible scale and with precision. Everything is in place for a legendary example of the wine.

I'm going to bring this to a close. D'Angerville is one of our favorite producers and these are my two favorites of his wines. I've been hunting down these wines for the past few months, but I've only been able to snag modest quantities. Word is definitely about how successful d'Angerville was in 2019. Don't miss these..

2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets
Special Bottle Price: $219.95
Burghound: "A wonderfully floral-infused nose, and particularly dried rose petal, flashes a pretty array of spice and freshly crushed red berries. The caressing, sappy and mouthcoating medium-bodied flavors possess another level of refinement that carries over to the balanced, classy, and intensely mineral-driven finale. This is terrific and a wine that should amply reward extended cellaring."

2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs
Special Bottle Price: $349.95
Burghound: "A gorgeously broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of earth, spice, plum, dark cherry, violet and subtle wood. The sleek but rich and impressively scaled flavors possess fine density and evident power that carries over to the sappy, mineral-suffused, and palate coating finish that is admirably persistent. I very much like the balance of the muscular finale that makes clear that this is going to require an extended siesta in a cool cellar. In a word, brilliant."
