2019 Wittmann Grosses Gewächs:
Aulerde, Kirchspiel, & Brunnenhauschen

Posted by Joe Salamone

In 2019, Wittmann produced a jaw-dropping collection of Grosses Gewächs.

In December, we offered Wittmann's Morstein. Today, we're excited to celebrate this strong collection with the three remaining GGs.

Wittmann's 2019 GGs are absolutely radiant with a tactile mineral tension and serious length, finesse, and definition

The Aulerde is the most penetrating and mineral wine of the trio. It boasts plenty of polish and harmony. The Kirchspiel brings an additional gripping intensity and beautiful refinement. Finally, Brunnenhaussen has a regal and multidimensional complexity along with a soaring cast of aromatics and minerality.

Philipp Wittmann took the helm of his family's estate in 1999 and it is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive estates in the Rheinhessen. Strangely, while Wittmann has a huge reputation in Germany, they have a much lower profile in America. Like Keller, they are dry Riesling specialists.

As their reputation has grown in the U.S. and especially in the great 2019 vintage, finding Wittmann's wines in quantity has been difficult. This is a very modest parcel and we expect this to sell out quickly.

2019 Aulerde GG

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Aulerde Riesling GG is enormously chalky and flinty on the rich and spicy yet pure, refreshing, deep and fruity nose. Silky textured, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a complex, structured, very elegant and juicy but linear and persistently mineral dry Riesling with remarkable purity and tension. The tension and grip of the 2019s offer impressive proof that Wittmann more and more manages to make the Aulerde a real Grosses Gewächs. However, the distance to the exceptional Westhofener 1G is smaller than to the Morstein GG."

2019 Kirchspiel GG
Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Kirchspiel Riesling GG is pure, fresh and spicy as well as coolish on the still yeasty but substantial and complex nose. Lush yet precise and refined on the elegant palate, this is a highly tensioned, grippy and chalky dry Riesling with great finesse, sustainable grip, intensity and stimulating salinity. A great Kirchspiel!"

2019 Brunnenhauschen GG
Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Brunnenhäuschen Riesling GG is beautifully pure, bright and refined on the lime and lemon-scented nose with a coolish and leafy tone. Fascinating! On the palate, this is a silky-textured, highly elegant, refined and complex yet weightless dry Riesling with immense finesse and character. This is a bright yet sustainable and energetic Brunnenhäuschen that will surely make into my cellar! It's chalky Riesling at its very best! Chapeau!"
