A couple of weeks ago, we offered Lauer's 2021 Feils and Kupp GGs. The response was intense.
This isn't surprising. Lauer's GGs have a huge following and word is clearly out that the 2021s are very impressive.
Lauer's 2021 GGs boast a combination of weightlessness and lithe paired with a stunning density. The balance and focus of the GGs are simply amazing.
For years, the chiseled and ruthless Schonfels was for me the pinnacle of what Lauer and the Saar could achieve with dry Riesling. With the 2021, the wine hits an epic level of focus and drive.
As many of you know, Schonfels is one of the Saar’s most daunting sites; a tiny, steep vineyard perched precariously above a large rock cliff, a precipice that drops a few hundred feet to the road below. It is also home to some of the oldest vines in the Saar, ungrafted centenarians that produce low yields of extraordinarily concentrated juice.
This wine is simply a fortress of slate and mineral. The magic of this wine is its ability to somehow be so complete and so layered while also being incredibly delicate and steely. This is a GG that not only has the depth, weight, and complexity of a "Grand Cru" wine, but it has an incredible fine-ness, polish, elegance, and finesse.
The Saar has an incredible ability to deliver intensity without weight. The 2021 manages the extraordinary feat of having something reminiscent of a Kabinett's featherweight and nervous energy with a depth and intensity that is unquestionably Grand Cru.
