"All about lightness and intensity" -Mosel Fine Wines
As many of you know, Schonfels has served as one of the great examples of what Lauer and the Saar could achieve with dry Riesling.
In the low-octane and very classical 2021 vintage, Lauer issued his first Kabinett from the Schonfels vineyard. As the note above makes clear, it is a beauty.Â
Schonfels is one of the Saar’s most daunting sites; a tiny, steep vineyard perched precariously above a large rock cliff, a precipice that drops a few hundred feet to the road below. It is also home to some of the oldest vines in the Saar, ungrafted centenarians that produce low yields of extraordinarily concentrated juice.
The 2021 Schonfels Kabinett presents the finesse of the Saar at its finest. It has serious energy and density. The balance that this Kabinett has is simply stunning. It's a perfect example of intensity without weight.
I'm not going to draw this out. Schonfels is Lauer's iconic wine and it has become obvious to many people that the 2021 Kabinetts are stunning. We expect our modest parcel to disappear quickly.Â

Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2021er Schonfels Kabinett, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, was made from fruit harvested at 80° Oechsle in this steep, south-east facing Lieu-Dit overseeing the Saar, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (52 g/l). It offers a superb nose of pear, fine spices, a touch of whipped cream, starfruit, aniseed herbs, and smoke. The wine is stunningly vibrant on the palate, where green herbs, citrusy elements, and vineyard peach seem to dance with the kick of acidity. The finish is racy, vibrant, and gorgeously balanced as pear and lemon sorbet interplays with herbs and chalky minerals. The aftertaste is all about lightness and intensity. This Kabinett is a delight!"
