This is one of those unlikely cult bottlings.
"Unlikely" simply because there is so little juice available that one has to wonder how the reputation of the bottle has gotten out there - but it has.
We have only 40 bottles to go around - this is basically the entire U.S. allocation. That's the bad news.
The good news is that we have any at all and that the 2010 Moric Grüner is the best we've ever had... by a country mile.
It's nothing less than a profound example of what Grüner can achieve. This is a meaty and textural Grüner, a "Grand Cru" Grüner that can seriously out-Chardonnay the weight and grandiosity of many of the best from Burgundy's Côte d'Or.
In 2010, it is especially forceful, a rushing, razor sharp acidity that blankets the palate, unleashing a fine and polished minerality from the back to front, and then back again.
This is an awesome bottle of wine - Roland Velich is just getting better and better with every vintage.
Given the concentration, the depth and structure of this wine - to say nothing of the reputation Grüner has for aging - we'd say a life-span of a decade is probably very conservative. Most likely, this will reach its 20th birthday in glorious form.
We'll keep it short and sweet with this one - big reputation, small inventory.
