Long Life, Short Story
1988 Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Pristine Parcel, Lowest Price in the World
With a small parcel of back-vintage Drouhin at well over $100 below the lowest price in the nation...
...how much should we write?
I’m always on the lookout for well-priced Drouhin - I don't think I'm alone in being a bit of a sucker for the signature class, purity and grace of Drouhin's wines. So when I came across this pristine back-vintage parcel at pricing well under half of what it’s going for elsewhere in the world (there are only two such places), I took it as quickly as I could.
My advice to you is to do the same.
The bottom line is that this is lovely, perfectly aged, premier cru Burgundy at just over $100 a bottle: 1988 Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru at $104.95. Compare that at $225, the only other price in the nation.
These bottles have hardly moved since their release, and they are in perfect condition. We suspect this will move quickly, so I’ll be concise - I doubt that my prose is as compelling as the value and quality of today’s wine.
1988 in Burgundy, while initially a bit overlooked, has really come around to be recognized in the last ten years as a classic, ripe yet wonderfully structured red Burgundy vintage whose grands and premiers crus are drinking at their pinnacles right now. Drouhin, with its incredible transparency, silkiness and ripe yet elegant fruit, really found synergy with the 88 vintage - its outstanding balance, composure, lithe tannins and long-lasting concentration.
All of these factors seem to be magnified in the wines of Chambolle-Musigny, the Côte de Nuits village that's always widely admired for its finesse and grace and that, in 88, turned out some of the finest, most classic and long-lived Pinot Noirs of the vintage. These are really pretty wines that, from the best producers - like Drouhin - can surprise you with their insistent longevity and maintained focus. This is where we find ourselves today.
Drouhin's 88 Chambolle-Musigny 1er is made from almost entirely domaine fruit from the beginning of the era of vigneron Philippe Drouhin, who brought increased focus on strict quality of fruit and organic practices into play here. The quality of the grapes, the pedigree of the site, and the careful and respectful winemaking are evidence in the way the wine is drinking today, at a mature and beautiful 22 years old.
Again, we are offering a small parcel with excellent provenance today only to those of you who have shown a strong appreciation for red Burgundy - the pricing, well over half off the rest of the few bottles left in the world today, suggests to us that this may be a very quick sell-out.
