Unbridled, Undeniable Class
1995 Marquis d'Angerville 1er Clos des Ducs
Marquee Volnay from the Marquis Himself
Clos des Ducs may be the greatest wine in Volnay, and the 1995 was likely the Volnay of the vintage.
Here, the legendary Jacques d’Angerville crafted a wine that, even with the tricky vintage's signature rich and ripe fruit, maintains remarkable structure, polish and finesse. As Allen Meadows notes, “this is big, rich and concentrated yet the trademark sense of elegance and finesse remains intact.”Â
Today we offer the 1995 Clos des Ducs at $144.95 – no compare-at pricing is available anywhere in the nation.
Indeed, finding back vintages of Clos des Ducs in any quantity is nearly impossible, as they’re mostly all stashed deep in collectors’ cellars. And while the domaine is undoubtedly creating brilliant wines today under Guillaume d'Angerville and Renaud de Villette, today's offer is an opportunity to experience a bit of history in a wine crafted by the Marquis himself, a Burgundy legend who brought immense respect to Volnay.
While the 1995 is certainly hitting its grand stride right now, this is only in mile one of its marathon – you can plan for, easily, another 15 to 20 years if you’d prefer to put it away in your own cellar. Marquis d’Angerville’s wines from the 60s and 70s are still drinking beautifully, with all of the estate’s signature exotic perfume and spice showing off their full potential.
A recently opened bottle of the 1995 Clos des Ducs showed off the premier cru monopole's absolutely unbridled, undeniable class. It's well accepted that this chalky, steep slope in Volnay is one of the grandest 1ers in the CĂ´te de Beaune, and indeed we found that this bottle held its own beside its companion for the evening - a 1996 grand cru from the CĂ´te de Nuits. Beneath the 95's lush fruit and deep, endless curves, the Clos des Ducs has precision, minerality and distinct cut. This is a wine that deserves to be, as it often is, mentioned in the same breath as the powerhouses further north.
The pricing, however, remains wonderfully inferior to those big brothers. Today's offer is on a small parcel that has been stored very well since its release - considering the wine's pedigree and pricing, we expect this to move quickly.
