Back-Vintage Burgundy Value
1995 Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin
The Only Pricing in the Nation
This is what "simple" Burgundy is capable of.
Today we present a $60 lesson in why one should NOT overlook the "simple" wines - especially when they're from Burgundy, where nothing is simple.
I have had some simply profound experiences with older, more basic Burgundies. A 1990 Bachelet Gevrey we drank at the store late one night - I still remember it very clearly some three years later. A 2002 Mugneret-Gibourg Bourgogne Rouge, so pure and balanced and spirited (in fact, we still have some of these).
These are wines that don't come with Grand Cru expectations (nor with Grand Cru price tags) and therefore they somehow access something very direct, something joyful, festive... these are Burgundies that get close to that gulpable, spirited charm of Beaujolais.
Yet, make no mistake, this is not Beaujolais - this is Gevrey-Chambertin from one of Burgundy's greatest houses, with a picture-perfect 15-year hibernation in the cellars of Drouhin. For this reason, the bottles from this parcel are likely going to drink much younger than you'd expect, with that bright, exceedingly clear and floral, jewel-box fruit.
As a whole, the 95s are in a great place right now, the Grand Crus from Gevrey still requiring time while the 1ers and village level wines begin to reveal their potential.
This 1995 Gevrey is now showing secondary sous bois aromas, notes of licorice, leather and autumn spices along with dark berry fruit, all sharing space and a general contentedness with the great balance this has come into.
Whether you're a Burgundy fiend with an eye for a back-vintage find or just starting to explore this region, this is a killer value that really shows off what "simple" Burgundy is capable of with age and from the best houses.
The provenance is perfect here, and the wines arrive straight from the estate early next year.
