We’re constantly on the hunt for great vintage Champagnes at the $100 mark. The Grande Annee is one of our go-tos in this category, oozing as it does with opulence and off-the-charts depth, but it has over the last few years been climbing well into the triple digits. Today, we are extremely pleased to bring it back down for you.
To be honest, this wine probably deserves its typically higher price tag. This is completely seductive juice. Rich and thundering with dark caramel, buttery brioche and heaps of baking spices, the solid core is wound together with a string of glittering citrus and rose petals.
This kind of power, bound with the downright sexy finesse that we crave is what makes Champagne my siren. This isn’t easy to find in Champagne, and Bollinger is one of the bosses. Perhaps their secret to success is the hefty use of Pinot Noir - 63% for the 1999 Grande Annee. The wines, on the palate, really have the presence of a red wine, full of huge aromatics and tactile richness. If you're looking for a Champagne to drink with more intense foods (welcome, grilling season), Bollinger is an excellent choice.
Track our history and you’ll notice a continuing love affair with the 99 Grande Annee. Two years ago our wine director wrote, I can't think of an under-$100 bottle of vintage Champagne that offers the finely detailed exuberance and pure hedonism of the Grande Annee. Last year, we did a tasting for the release of the 1997 Bollinger RD, and while that wine was truly lovely, the wine that really stole the show and won us over was the 1999 Bollinger Grande Annee.
