A Benchmark, 0.8HA:
2017 Baudry Chinon La Croix Boissée Blanc

Posted by Joe Salamone

Baudry is the master of Chinon.

To a very large extent, it's the Croix Boissée vineyard that's solidified the domaine's benchmark status.

There's something incredibly compelling in Croix Boissée's finesse, detail and tightly coiled minerality.

Today, we're happy to offer Baudry's extremely limited Croix Boissée Blanc. It's a wine that's easily the most eye-opening expression of Chenin Blanc anywhere.

There's no other Chinon Blanc that can compete with Croix Boissée in terms of sheer quality, but especially when it comes to class and clarity of expression.

It's sourced from the top portion of Croix Boissée where the site's clay practically disappears and only a chalky mixture of limestone and sand remains. The terroir makes itself felt in the wine's ruthless minerality.

The first vintage that we tasted was 2004 and it amazed us to such an extent that many of us stashed bottles away in our personal cellars. As of a handful of years ago, the wine had evolved beautifully.

What makes Baudry's Croix Boissée Blanc so compelling is its finely knit, subtle complexity. It possesses a smoky and saline driving textural minerality that's really fascinating along with citrus, stone fruits, and exotic and complementing gently bitter notes.

The 2017 is especially bright and concentrated. It has soaring aromatics and a powerful stony minerality. Baudry has a really amazing ability to combine honesty and polish. The 2017 Croix Boissée exemplifies Baudry's skill in this regard.

Each year, Croix Boissée Blanc is one of the arrivals that I look forward to the most. We bought all we could, but it's still a pretty modest amount. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try out best.
