Drouhin's Chambolle 1er Cru offers a pedigree and class that may be unrivaled for the price.
Chambolle is one of the most beautiful expressions of red Burgundy. For many years, Drouhin's 1er Cru has served as an archetypal Chambolle for me. It's a wine that's simply beguiling.
Sure, you can find sexier bottlings from Chambolle- Musigny: Bonnes Mares, Amoureuses, etc. But each time I taste through Drouhin, the 1er Cru bottling is incredibly memorable. Over the years, it's become clear that I'm not alone. Our offers are always met with a big response.
The Chambolle 1er Cru bottling combines five small 1er Cru parcels in Chambolle, all owned and biodynamically farmed by Drouhin, with vine age averaging 30 years. The plots are simply too small to bottle individually. There seems to be some wisdom at work here, because the wine has an impressive sense of completeness along with great tension and balance.
The 2017 Chambolle 1er Cru is a diamond-cut beauty. Burghound's tasting note captures the wine very well calling it "refined and satiny" and highlighting the "driving, detailed and beautifully persistent finish". It's very difficult not to dwell on the wine's brilliant purity and infused seductive texture.
Even considering that this is a wine that I always love among the lineup, the 2017 stands out. Everything is in place for a jaw dropping red Burgundy down the road.
