It keeps piling on. Every time I taste a Volnay from 2011, I'm struck by how successful the vintage was here.

The 2011 vintage produced Volnays so pure, so wonderfully terroir-expressive. As Galloni notes above, Lafon's 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots exemplifies all of this.

Dominique Lafon is best known for his Montrachet, which is painfully rare and if you can find it, commands $1,000+ a bottle. However, Lafon has a magic touch with making Red Burgundy, especially Volnay. In the context of Lafon and great Burgundy, the value is impressive.

Lafon's Santenots is one of the great wines of Volnay. In the hierarchy, it slides in just behind the best bottles from d'Angerville and Lafarge. Lafon's Santenots has an incredible aging potential - a recently opened bottle of '78 was stunning.

Santenots is one of Volnay's top 1er Crus and Lafon is king of the site. Clive Coates says Santenots has a "lush sensuality" to it and we should also emphasize its muscle. It's a masculine rendition of Volnay.

Lafon has a keen touch with Santenots, managing to take its power and rich texture and render a wine that walks on tiptoes with transparency, detail and a stunning, pulverized rock minerality.

This represents a very small parcel that I recently picked up and is priced very sharp. I tried to limit the scope of the list, but I imagine that these bottles will disappear. For many, the word is out on Lafon's 2011 Santenots.

Antonio Galloni: "Lafon's 2011 Volnay Santenots is one of the most reticent wines of the vintage. With time in the glass, the Santenots opens up a bit, showing its expressive aromatics and silky, layered fruit. There is a crystalline purity to the 2011 that is impossible to miss. Dark red and purplish fruit and floral notes add lift on the precise finish. The 2011 is going to need time to fully blossom in bottle, but it is exquisite, even today."
